Things to do in Naoetsu
Ski Sea Japan House
Naoetsu, Japan

Comprising of neighbouring traditional 2 storey, 3BR machiya style row houses, these fully self contained houses are currently being renovated and renewed by a local architect, with completion set for October 2025. If you’re looking for ski resorts near Sea of Japan, this is the place for you.
Downstairs at Ski Sea Japan House is a lounge, kitchen, dining area and small utility room for baggage/ski/bike storage. On the second floor is a large tatami bedroom with both western and futon bedding, plus a tatami floored sitting area with study/work nook and sofa bed.
Blue Sea House next door is a slightly smaller option with a hardwood lounge room and kitchen/dining downstairs. Upstairs there is are two tatami bedrooms with both western and futon bedding, plus a western style sitting area with sofa bed and TV.
The houses both have new kitchens and updated bathrooms.
Both options are best suited to groups of up to 6 people but we are happy to discuss requests for smaller or larger groups.
There is free and fast wifi available throughout making it ideal for digital nomads seeking a long stay during winter or green season.
This is a perfect location for a summer beach stay for swimming, fishing or just taking it easy. There’s even a surf beach down the coast a bit around Tanihama. But it’s also a great location for long stay guests during winter ski season Japan (but you’ll need to rent a car).

Ski Season Japan
Why does the Japan Sea coast get snow?
Did you know that our Sea of Japan coast is one of the snowiest inhabited regions on Earth? The reason lies in a combination of geography, climate, and seasonal winds. Here’s why it gets so much snow:
Cold Siberian Winds in Winter
⦁ In winter, very cold, dry air masses form over Siberia.
⦁ These winds blow eastward across the relatively warm waters of the Japan Sea.
Moisture Pickup Over the Sea
⦁ As the cold air passes over the sea, it picks up large amounts of moisture.
⦁ This transforms the dry Siberian air into snow-bearing clouds.
Mountain Barriers on the Japan Side
⦁ When these moisture-laden clouds reach our western coast, they’re forced upward by the local mountain ranges.
⦁ This orographic lift cools the air further, causing heavy snowfall on the Japan Sea side.
Snow Belt Formation
⦁ The result is a “snow belt” stretching down through Niigata and Hokuriku regions.
⦁ The mountains above Naoetsu get 12-14+ metres of snow per winter, among the heaviest snowfalls in the world.
Meanwhile, the Pacific side of Honshu (Tokyo, Nagano’s eastern slopes, etc.) is shielded by mountains, so it sees much less snow — this is called the “Japan Sea side winter climate” vs. the “Pacific side winter climate.”
